Medical Abortion

A medical abortion is another safe and effective method for early abortion. The medical abortion is used up to 9 weeks of pregnancy. A medical abortion uses two medications to end a pregnancy. The first is mifepristone and it weakens the attachment of the pregnancy to the uterus. The second is called misoprostol and it makes the uterus cramp and causes bleeding. This expels the pregnancy.

Medication abortion services include ultrasound, urinalysis, Rh blood type, complete blood count, and physical exam. Counseling services are also included and consist of medical informed consent, individual pre-abortion counseling, and contraceptive counseling and prescribing.

• If you are planning on having the medication abortion you do not need a driver.

SURGICAL ABORTION

1) Dilation and Curettage (D&C)
This is a surgical procedure that can safely be performed in one day as an outpatient.  This procedure is typically done for pregnancies in the first trimester. Patients can expect to be at EMW Women’s Surgical Center for approximately five to six hours.

First trimester services include ultrasound, urinalysis, Rh blood type, complete blood count, and physical exam.  Counseling services are also included and consist of medical informed consent, individual pre-abortion counseling, and contraceptive counseling and prescribing.

2) Dilation and Evacuation (D&E) One-Day Surgery
For 2nd trimester patients between 13-16 weeks gestation, this procedure can safely be performed in one day as an outpatient. Because the woman is further along in her pregnancy, the cervix must be dilated gradually before surgery. This dilation process is accomplished by inserting laminaria, thin pieces of sterile material, in to the cervical opening. The laminaria expands as it absorbs moisture from the body allowing the cervix to dilate or open gradually. Laminaria are placed in the morning and surgery is performed later in the afternoon to reach maximum dilation. This will make the surgical procedure as safe as possible. Patients can expect to be at EMW Women’s Surgical Center for approximately six to seven hours.

Two-Day Surgery
For 2nd trimester patients greater than 16 weeks gestation, this procedure can safely be performed in two days as an outpatient. Because the woman is further along in her pregnancy, the cervix must be dilated gradually for 24 hours before surgery. Patients must make arrangements to stay overnight in Louisville. Patients must also expect to be at EMW Women’s Surgical Center for approximately four hours each day.

Second trimester services include ultrasound, urinalysis, Rh blood type, complete blood count, and physical exam. Counseling services are also included and consist of medical informed consent, individual pre-abortion counseling, and contraceptive counseling and prescribing.
