What Is Mifepristone?
Mifepristone is one of two FDA-approved medications for medication abortion in the United States. Used safely since its approval in 2000, it’s the first pill in a two-step regimen that ends an early pregnancy, typically up to 10 weeks.
How Does It Work?
Mifepristone blocks the hormone progesterone, which is necessary for maintaining a pregnancy. Without it, the uterine lining breaks down. Misoprostol, the second medication taken 24–48 hours later, causes cramping and bleeding to expel the pregnancy. Together, they are more than 95% effective.
Is It Safe?
Yes. Mifepristone has been used by millions and is backed by decades of research. It’s approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and supported by leading medical organizations worldwide. Most people experience mild symptoms like cramping, bleeding, or nausea, which usually pass within a few days.
