Abortion Pill Q&A

What is a medical abortion?

A medical abortion, also called a medication abortion or the abortion pill, is a type of prescription medication used to terminate a pregnancy up until the tenth week. At Suburban Women’s Clinic, your doctor prescribes Mifeprex®, an FDA-approved treatment for the termination of a pregnancy.

How does a medical abortion work?

A medical abortion works in two ways based on the combination of the prescribed medications: mifepristone and misoprostol. You first take the mifepristone at the clinic which will stop your body from producing progesterone. Without progesterone, your placenta and fetus will stop growing.

After about 48 hours, you’ll take the second medication, misoprostol, at home. Misoprostol causes uterine cramping and bleeding, which passes the pregnancy through your uterus. You may want to wear a sanitary pad or stay near a toilet or shower during this time for convenience.

What can I expect during a medical abortion?

If you want to undergo a medical abortion before the seventh week of your pregnancy, your doctor first confirms your pregnancy through a pregnancy test and ultrasound exam. Your doctor then provides you with the required educational materials from the state of Texas and you wait 24 hours to consider your options.

After waiting 24 hours, you can continue forward with the medical abortion if you choose to. You’ll return to the office and be given the first medication, mifepristone, during your appointment. You can then return home and take the second medication, misoprostol, after approximately 48 hours.

Your doctor explains the entire process so you know what to expect and exactly when to take the second medication. After taking the second medication, you can expect cramping and bleeding that will cause the pregnancy to be passed from your uterus within two to 24 hours.

Is a medical abortion safe?

For most healthy women, a medical abortion is safe up to seven weeks of pregnancy. There are some reasons a medical abortion may not be appropriate for you, including:

  • Having an IUD in place (if so, it must be removed before a medical abortion)
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Adrenal gland problems
  • Taking blood thinners
  • Some bleeding disorders
  • Taking certain steroid medications

In about two to seven percent of women, a medical abortion is unsuccessful. In this case, you may need to return to the clinic for a surgical abortion. Your doctor discusses these risks and helps you choose the best plan for your needs.
